READERS

Applications

Black Chambers invites Reader Applications and supports at least one Reader per year.

Applications are considered twice a year for Readers who intend to undertake the Bar Practice Course in the following calendar year.

Applications for the May 2027 intake should be made by 7 April 2026. Applications for the September 2027 intake should be made by 25 August 2026.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants are encouraged to apply.

Requirements
  1. Applicant must hold a conditional practising certificate as a Reader;
  2. The Readership period is for a maximum of 12 months;
  3. Membership of chambers following the readership period is not guaranteed;
  4. A substantial reduced monthly clerks fee.
  5. Accommodation in a shared space may be available by arrangement with Chambers.
  6. It is preferred that the Reader has a Member of Black Chambers as one of their tutors.

Applications should be sent to our senior clerk Jessie Vella via email and should include a current resumé, two referees, an appropriately redacted example of recent written submissions and a redacted advice (or an explanation why these can’t be provided). Applications should also address why the applicant wants to read at Black Chambers and any personal interests outside of the law. All applications will be treated with the strictest of confidence.
